New York City offers a variety of option for wheelchair accessible transportation to serve travelers with disabilities. In the following menus you’ll find details for accessible taxis, paratransit, public buses, airport transportation, ferry services and the trains. For visitors in wheelchairs, we strongly advise the use of the city’s bus services since a majority of the subway stations are not accessible. Guide dogs are welcomed in New York City. When in doubt, call 511 (711 for relay services) for trip planning assistance. Click on each tab to get full details.

  • NYC Accessible Taxi Services

    Yellow taxis are available for wheelchair users. These are for hire vehicles and operate on a metered fare. 


    Wow Accessible Dispatch App

    You can use it the following ways:

    4. For those with a hearing or speech disability, call 711 for Relay services.


    Curb App 

    This is another app to use from your phone to seamlessly order a wheelchair accessible taxi.

  • Access-A-Ride (AAR) New York City Paratransit Transportation

    Access-a-Ride is the city’s public transportation for eligible customers with disabilities or health conditions that prevent them from using public buses or subways.  


    New Users Best to apply 2-4 weeks prior to travelling to know if you’re eligible.

    Current Paratransit Users can request for reciprocal service which can be done quickly by calling 877-337-2107 or 718-393-4000, pressing prompt #1. Hours to call are EST Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm.

  • MTA New York City Transit Buses

    All MTA buses are wheelchair accessible.

    Bus fare is $2.75 per ride, per person. Make sure you have a Metrocard ready since these are not sold on buses. Reduced fare of $1.35 applies to those with a disability.  Click here to read more information on qualifying for reduced fare.

    It's an excellent app which we recommend you keep handy.  It allows you to see buses running at your location with real-time schedule.

  • Airport Transportation

    TAXI SERVICES 

    La-Guardia (LGA) and John F. Kennedy (JFK) Airports


    Taxi Services are available at each airport. After departing your terminal, follow the signs for Taxi Services.  You are allowed to go to the front of the line and request a wheelchair accessible taxi which the dispatcher will get for you. Drivers are required to assist passegers with disabilites.

    Toyota Sienna

    Max passengers:  1 wheelchair & 4 additional passengers


    Toyata NV200

    Max passengers:  1 wheelchair & 1 additional passenger


    Max luggage per vehicle is dependent on space once all passengers and wheelchair are secured.


    PRICES

    To & From LaGuardia Airport:

    This a metered fare price. 

    To/From JFK and any location in Manhattan:

    Rate on dashboard must be ‘Rate #02 – JFK Airport.’

    Charge is a flat fare of $52 plus tolls, a 50-cent MTA State Surcharge, a 30-cent Improvement Surcharge, and $4.50 rush hour surcharge (4 PM to 8 PM weekdays, excluding legal holidays).

    Passenger is responsible for paying all tolls.

    From JFK to other New York City destinations:

    This a metered fare price. 

    To Newark Airport:

    Rate on dashboard must be ‘Rate #03 – Newark Airport.’

    This is a metered fare price. 

    There is a $17.50 Newark Surcharge.

    Passenger is responsible for paying all roundtrip tolls.

    There is a 30-cent Improvement Surcharge.

    SHUTTLE SERVICES 

    La-Guardia (LGA), John F. Kennedy (JFK)  & Newark (EWR) Airports


    Shuttle services are available from each of these airports and welcomes passengers with disabilities. Passengers who uses a wheelchair and those with service animals are able to book their transfers online.  When making an accessible reservation, passengers should specify whether or not an accessible vehicle is required or if a service animal will be accompanying the customer.

  • Ferry Services

    Ferries are relatively new to the city and seems like an excellent way to explore Long Island City, Astoria, Greenpoint, Dumbo and Williamsburg from Manhattan.

    Ferry fare is $2.75 per ride, per person. There is no free transfer to the MTA Bus or MTA Train.

    They are accessible and on a first-come, first-serve basis.

    Important: We highly recommend the use of MTA buses vs. the  trains. Only 25% of subway stations are accessible plus the elevators have very poor operating records which may or may not be reflected in the Elevator Status.
