Beating the winter blues while shopping downtown New York City!

The expansive relaxing area in Brookfield Place lined with palm trees.

What do you do during the winter season in New York City? Shopping, a favorite past time for many including ours! Annie had been telling us to visit Brookfield Place because it’s one of her favorite place she has visited on her day program trip and now we know why. It’s an impressive mall in Downtown New York City, directly across the street from the World Trade Center with expansive views of the Hudson Waterfront.

Brookfield Place, notable for luxury shopping with many high end brands, caters to Wall Street crowd as well as tourists visiting downtown and the World Trade Center area. The atrium often referred to as the Winter Garden is home to actual live palm trees (yes think island vibe in the middle of winter) and is the gathering place for many free family-friendly activities. There is a small ice skating rink outside which is open during the winter months. The mall houses two noteworthy eateries, Hudson Eats, an upscale, casual food court featuring 14 concepts and Le District, a French marketplace with a patisserie, a marketplace, a creperie and full service fine restaurants.

We spent a couple of hours at the mall, checking out our favorite stores then had lunch at Hudson Eats. The areas in the mall we visited were wheelchair accessible and staffs at the stores as well as the various security staffs we approached were all happy to assist. We’d highly recommend a visit, even if you don’t plan on shopping, it’s visually stunning, airy with plenty of places to sit and relax. An insider tip, check out their events calendar ahead of time to see what free shows and events they have on weekends. This mall would be an excellent add on to those visiting the World Trade Center.
