The best way to kick-start summer in New York City!

Accessible Travel NYC Fleet Week

Fleet Week in New York City is the ‘unofficial’ kick-off to the summer season as it’s a weeklong celebration leading up to Memorial Day Weekend. The city buzzes with sailors, marines, coast guards and visitor ships are docked along the Hudson River. What better way to enjoy the festivities than being on an actual ship on the Hudson River? We enrouted to the Intrepid Museum for a fun-filled family day.

There were lots of festive activities happening that weekend on the ship for Fleet Week. From live music on the deck, to the Marines who were exhibiting their tanks and happy to take pictures with everyone as well as science experiment stations for all ages, the crowds were sure to be pleased. On the top level (Flight Deck), there are sweeping views of New York City skyline with many old airplanes on exhibit. On the middle floor (Hanger Deck), we were able to see the Space Shuttle with many artifacts and historical footage on film. On the main level, there were activities and temporary exhibit for Fleet Week.

We chose to be dropped off at the Ink48 Hotel since we knew it would be busy at Pier 86. It was a short stroll, under 10 minutes from the hotel to the entrance of the museum. Although it was busy day to visit the museum, the lines to enter were manageable before noon. As soon as security saw Annie, they ushered her and Neil to the front for faster admission. Once inside, it was very spacious to walk around despite the fact that it’s probably one of their busiest weekends. We visited a majority of the Intrepid which is on the ground, top and middle levels without any issues. The elevators were crowded, however everyone was mindful of Annie in the wheelchair. All of the museum is accessible for wheelchair users except the Submarine Growler and Concorde. It was a fun-filled visit for the entire family and would happily return.
