Celebrating Spring in New York City!

Accessible Travel NYC NYBG Spring

The New York Botanical Garden consist of 250 acres of land with an extensive collection of more than one million living plants. It’s listed on the National Historic Landmark, is the largest in any city of the United States and best of all, located in our hometown, the Bronx. Renown for it’s diverse landscape, extensive gardens collection and excellent exhibitions, the NYBG host events year-round for all ages to enjoy.

We managed two visits this year. One during Spring, which was our first family adventure we planned around this blog and more recently, fall. During Spring, our visit was on the last day of the Orchid Show and also one of the hottest Saturday of spring weekend weather. Although we were at the gardens by 11 am that day, it was very crowded to get into the Conservatory to see the orchids with a 45-minutes wait. Once we explained to the staff at the entrance we had a a wheelchair user in our party, they allowed us to get to the front of the line. Daniel Ost, one of the world’s leading floral artist created a spectacularly breathtaking display of form, colors and textures to showcase the orchids. We were all really amazed at the beauty, intricate details and huge variety of orchids, because it really looked like a scene from a fairytale. Strolling through the rest of the Conservatory, we slowly navigate various temperatures and crowds of chattering guests. We go from warm and pungent tropical rainforest into hot desert temperatures preserving the cactus collection, which is also one our other favorite exhibits. The striking desert cactus collection provide an impressive contrast to the humid rainforest galleries on the other side of the Conservatory.

Access at the entrance is extremely easy and the lines were short to get our entry tickets. There are plenty of benches scattered around for seating and relaxation. We found the all areas we visited in the Conservatory and the grounds to be accessible for a wheelchair user. The staffs provided excellent services ensuring we all have a memorable experience.
